UNDER THE BAR - HENSON HOTEL

In our latest episode of Under The Bars we venture into the heart of Marrickville and jump behind the wood at The Henson Park Hotel. With its billiards table, dart board, sports bar and healthy selection of local Eora brews and bevs, the Henson oozes classic Aussie pub, and attracts an eclectic mix of local families, brew dogs and barflys. 

We sat down with Rory, their Operations Lord, to talk about his love for this friendly pub and carefree nights with a Wham! soundtrack.

CP | What do you like most about working at The Henson?

R | The best part of The Henson for me would undoubtedly have to be the people, both patrons and staff, from the beginning it's been such a friendly and welcoming place to be, such an atmosphere of good and caring people. The family friendly aspect of the pub as well makes for really wholesome moments like the grins on kids faces as you make them ice creams is pretty great.

CP | What’s the funniest thing you’ve seen or heard while working?

R | Late one Friday night a year or so ago a classic tune, Club Tropicana by Wham! came on in the front bar. Two of our beloved locals who were just drinking and chatting at the bar yelled and got up in excitement asking us many times (even after we had) to turn it up! They then proceeded to get up and perform an almost salsa-esque routine while the whole bar watched, and a few of us behind the bar cackled and applauded. Shockingly they seemed to also know(or guess) all the lyrics. Then followed by a song request karaoke for the remainder of the night.

CP | What dish would you pair a Normie with at The Henson?

R | Would have to put it alongside our chicken burger. I'm sure most people would agree that beer and burgers is a pretty fantastic combo.

CP | Describe The Henson in three words

R | 'Your Friendly Local'.

CP | What’s your favourite drinking song?

R | Going with an all-time fave, 'I Wanna Be Adored' by The Stone Roses. Always happy when this one comes on.
