UNDER THE BAR - LULIE TAVERN

Interview and intro by Carolina Pasini | Photos by Jack Gruber

In the second instalment of our newest series, Under The Bar, where we highlight iconic venues in the food and beverage scene, we're profiling Lulie Tavern, an outright charmer in Naarm.

In 2021, Jon-Lee Farrell and Brendan Kennedy, mates and masterminds behind Luli's, turned this Johnston Street gem into Abbotsford's rock'n'roll haven. With a primo spot and unpretentious vibes, Lulie Tavern invites locals to revel in good times. From neon signs gifted by patrons to a collection of memorabilia, the place exudes a laid-back charm that makes it the ultimate spot for an epic night with your mates. Catch some local bands, hit the pool table, have a dance – Lulie's got it all.

We sat down with Riley, our friend and venue manager, to talk about creativity, prawn auctions and keeping things fresh.

CP | What do you like most about working at Lulie?

R | I like that no two weeks are the same. There’s no Groundhog Day about working at Lulie, there are always different bands and events each week which keeps things fresh. I also love all the personalities that come through the door and how the venue attracts really creative individuals, on both sides of the bar.

CP | What’s the funniest thing you’ve seen or heard while working?

R | Pretty much anytime one of our colourful regulars, Pinky, comes in. Whether it be prawn auctions in the smokers or pretending to hold up the place at gunpoint during peak dinner service, there’s never a dull moment.

CP | What dish would you pair a Normie with at Lulie?

R | Can’t go past the classic Whopper with bacon.

CP | Describe Lulie in three words

R | Episode of Cheers

CP | What’s your favourite drinking song?

R | The Game - Motörhead
